Six months later…Government members reiterate
Barrett concerns with invasive species

Queens Park – Ontario’s Opposition Environment Critic saw his own concerns over the impact of Emerald Ash Borer resurface from the Government side of the Legislature this week.

Some 6 months after MPP Barrett pointed questions to Ontario’s Minister of Natural Resources, Donna Cansfield, about help for Norfolk and Haldimand Counties to deal with invasive species destroying stands of trees, Government MPP David Orazietti raised concern over the discovery of EAB in Sault Ste. Marie in the house yesterday.

“The destruction of ash trees caused by this pest have been quite significant in southern Ontario and through the northern United States,” stated MPP Orazietti. “Can you tell us what steps we're taking to address the challenges posed by the emerald ash borer?”

As with MPP Barrett’s query, Minister Cansfield answered the Orazietti question by pointing to Ottawa.

“Every year we have one new invasive species come in this province, and it's time we start working together to make a difference to stop this invasion,” she said

Minister Cansfield also listed recent investments of $50,000 to an innovative company for a new product, $650,000 to the Essex conservation authority to replant ash trees, plus another $15 million.
