JUST THE FACTS: HST IS STILL A $3 BILLION TAX GRAB ON CONSUMERS

For Immediate Release
November 4th, 2009

(Queen’s Park) – A report commissioned by Ontario’s Liberal government on the effects of the HST contradicts other studies done by TD Bank and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, says MPP Lisa MacLeod the Official Opposition Revenue Critic.

Quotes:

“The HST is a $3 Billion tax grab on the backs of Ontario Families so the McGuinty Liberals will be able to pay off their $25 Billion deficit”. --- MPP Lisa MacLeod, PC Revenue Critic

“All job numbers suggested by the McGuinty Liberals must be taken with a grain of salt- after all, before losing 207,000 jobs in the last year; their budget forecast predicted they would create 146,000 jobs.  The proof is in the Liberals’ dismal job numbers”. --- MPP Lisa MacLeod, PC Revenue Critic

Quick Facts:

  • The Canadian Federation of Independent Business has found that small businesses expect to spend close to $4,000 on HST transition costs – and are deeply concerned about the impact of the HST on consumer spending and the underground economy.

  • A TD Economic Report has found that “Sales tax harmonization means an increase in the tax burden on consumers who will pay the flat HST on a broader array of goods and services than before. This will lead to an overall increase in the consumer price level”
