Barrett calls on government to stop blind rush on pre-budget hearings

Never underestimate the wisdom around the boardroom or kitchen table

Queens Park – A government that has spent this great province into a recession and into “have-not” status, should take the time to listen to people.

That was the theme of Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett’s speech in the Ontario Legislature yesterday as he spoke to a motion calling on government to rethink it’s rushed schedule that would see pre-budget hearings for 2009 over and done before the year even begins.

“I know what this government is trying to do by having hearings the week before Christmas,” Barrett asserted. “They're trying to avoid discussion of economic collapse that surely await us around the corner in 2009.”

Barrett went on to underline the importance of opening government’s ears to the wisdom available from people across the province who will be shut out of the current ramrod schedule of pre-budget hearings.

“As a member of the finance committee, I've lost confidence in this government. Clearly, this government needs help. They need advice. They've been caught flat-footed, and it's time they had an opportunity to listen to people out there,” stated Barrett. “Without that kind of input, this government is doomed to repeat some past mistakes.”
