Will pesticides become part of underground economy?
Queen’s Park – As the McGuinty Liberals get set to release the final set of rules under the Cosmetic Pesticides Act, local MPP and PC Environment Critic Toby Barrett warns of the creation of a new underground market.
According to reports, tomorrow the Ontario Government will announce sweeping regulations that will outlaw lawncare products and impact lawncare companies and retailers right across the province. Consumers may find themselves at a loss when looking for a trusted product to take care of infestations like grubs.
“This government has problems with illegal tobacco due to its high tax policies and over-regulation,” Barrett said. “What do you think will happen with pesticide products? What will this government do to stop pesticide products from being brought into Ontario and sold out of the backs of trucks?”
Barrett told members of the Ontario Legislature today that lawncare companies, farmers and other stakeholders have asking why the Ministry of the Environment will not consult with them on legislation that could force them out of business.
Referring to Environment Minister John Gerretsen, Barrett said: “Minister, I know you don’t believe in this legislation but unless you speak up, it’s you who will face the music tomorrow. What will you tell lawncare companies who are already struggling due to the economic crisis? Will the regulations be phased in for these businesses? How soon will they have to comply?
“When will this government realize that banning things in this province is rarely the answer?”
