Does Six Nations have permission for DCE ‘potluck’?

Dunnville – MPP Toby Barrett is pressuring Aboriginal Affairs Minister Michael Bryant to follow the lead of his predecessor to find an alternative location for the planned ‘potluck’ at DCE on April 20th  – the second anniversary of the OPP raid in Caledonia.

“Some of my constituents are concerned that this type of event will be occurring on Ontario Government property, and is renewing tensions between various groups – especially as the second anniversary of the DCE OPP raid looms,” Barrett said. “For this reason I have written to Aboriginal Affairs Minister Michael Bryant.”

On October 15, 2007, there were large gatherings at both DCE and at the Lions parking lot in Caledonia -- two days prior, the Minister of the day, David Ramsay, had discussions with and wrote to the chief representative of the Haudenosaunee/Six Nations. He informed them that the province had not provided permission for additional persons to be on the DCE site and he also urged the chief representative to find an alternate location for the picnic.

“I have now written to Minister Bryant asking if he will follow the lead of his predecessor and have this very important discussion with native organizers,” Barrett said.
