Constantly changing coal-closure commitments costing current government
credibility: Barrett
Asks how many times government can break the same promise
Simcoe—Dalton McGuinty’s
latest coal closure promise is further proof of a government that has
abandoned any effort to be honest with Ontarians, MPP Toby Barrett said
today.
“After nearly four years of broken
promises, Dalton McGuinty has lost all credibility on the coal closure
file,” Barrett said. “How many times will Dalton McGuinty
break this promise before he admits he is making it up as he goes along?
“There are many issues at play
here, including pollution, climate change, economic stability, and local
jobs,” Barrett continued. “We need to know what the plan is,
and it’s regrettable that the Premier’s promises provide us
with no real insight into what he will end up deciding.”
Previous broken promises on coal closures
include:
|
All coal-fired power plants closed by 2007 (2003 election promise); |
|
All coal-fired power plants closed by 2007, with Nanticoke closed
in early 2009 (June 15, 2005 Ministry of Energy News Release); |
|
2015 “too far off in the future” to close coal plants
(Dwight Duncan, April 27, 2005); |
|
Ministry of Energy asks Ontario Power Authority (OPA) to develop
a schedule for closing the coal-fired power plants (June 13, 2006); |
|
All coal-fired plants closed by 2014 (Promised on June 18, 2007); |
“John Tory and the PC Caucus have
a better plan to clean up our environment,” Barrett continued. “We
would clean up the coal-fired power plants and install clean-air technology,
at least at Nanticoke where it would do the most good. And we will explore
options such as gasification and carbon sequestration.”
