Opposition MPP secures literacy funding
Simcoe – Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett commends PC colleague Garfield Dunlop for his persistence regarding literacy funding.
The Simcoe North MPP has continued his efforts to secure adequate funding for community-based literacy programs and his patience and persistence has paid off to the tune of $25 million. The monies are earmarked for both literacy and essential skills training.
It is unknown whether or not Haldimand-Norfolk will receive any of the funds. However, Barrett said that the announcement is proof of Dunlop’s tireless efforts to convince the McGuinty government that the lack of basic skills like reading and writing are holding many people back from gainful employment.
Back in February, MPP Dunlop introduced a resolution calling on the Ontario government to “provide adequate funding to community-based literacy and basic skills programs so that the agencies can properly address the growing enrolment.” The resolution received all-party support.
“This is good news, and my friend and colleague deserves kudos for taking this issue to the floor of the Ontario Legislature,” Barrett said.
