Liberals Back-Track on Emission
Abatement
Simcoe –
Haldimand-Norfolk-Brant MPP Toby Barrett is questioning why Ontario’s
Energy Minister is back-tracking on the idea of pollution-abatement at
OPG Nanticoke.
While the McGuinty government campaigned
on a promise to close the coal-fired plant by 2007, they have failed to
find an energy replacement and have had to break the promise. Minister
Duncan is now citing 2014 as the year in which Nanticoke will be closed.
Further, on CBC radio this morning, MPP Barrett heard the Minister musing
about pumping money into additional pollution-abatement initiatives.
“I wonder if the Minister is taking
my advice on this issue,” MPP Barrett questioned. “Since 2003
I have been calling on the government to invest in more scrubbers and
pollution abatement equipment – I guess they’ve finally come
to the conclusion that there is such a thing as clean air technology.”
Barrett said he is eager to learn more
about Duncan’s ideas and proposals for Nanticoke.
