Barrett says Supply Management is paramount in raw milk debate
Queen’s Park—MPP
Toby Barrett today told the Ontario Legislature that milk producers could
reinforce political support for supply management, if they were given
the chance to educate an all-party task force on raw milk issues.
As Agriculture Critic, Barrett reiterated
that John Tory and PC Caucus unequivocally support supply management.
Every PC MPP has signed the Farmgate5 petition in support of supply management
– something 31 Liberal MPPs refuse to do.
“We are debating whether the government
of Ontario should create an all-party task force to examine the issues
around raw milk, and then table its findings to the House prior to the
spring session of Parliament,” Barrett told the Ontario Legislature.
He reiterated MPPs were debating whether
or not they wanted to learn more about the issues around raw milk: issues
such as Salmonella, E.Coli, and Supply Management.
Barrett then went on to explain why the
proposed resolution would give politicians a greater understanding of
the issues and debates surrounding raw milk.
“The task force would give farmers
an access point to MPPs and an opportunity to explain how the raw milk
debate would fit into issues like supply management,” Barrett explained
to the House. “How can we defend farmers and supply management,
if we don’t give them the an opportunity to present their case in
a forum?”
The resolution was defeated in the Legislature,
but read as follows:
That, in the opinion of this House,
the government of Ontario should immediately form an all-party task force
to examine the issues surrounding raw milk and that the all-party task
force report its findings to the House before the end of the spring session.
