Barrett reaffirms case for Delhi licensing office

Simcoe – Two years after meeting with then Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield regarding the closure of Delhi’s license-issuing office, Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett reminded government the issue is not going away.

Earlier this week Barrett read petitions, titled, “Delhi Wants Its MTO Office Back” into the Legislature, highlighting the need for licensing office services to be restored.

“Whereas the community of Delhi has historically had a driver's licence issuing office; and whereas the current government set out a request for proposal for a new operator of a driver's licence issuing office in Delhi,” Barrett related to the House, “and whereas many individuals in the town of Delhi responded to the RFP and paid $68 in application fees to the Ontario government…

“… We, the undersigned, demand the McGuinty government revisit the proposals already received and reopen an office to meet the needs of residents within the community.”

Delhi’s licensing office had been in operation between 1982 and 2005, when it closed due to unforeseen circumstances. Since that time there have been two Request for Proposals and not one applicant has been able to meet the criteria set out by the Ministry. However, when asked for the criteria, the details have been slim.

“Two years later, I find it unbelievable that there has not been one business in Delhi able to provide services required by the Ministry of Transportation,” Barrett said after reading the petition. “My office still receives calls asking when the Minister will restore our licensing services.”

For the last two-and-a-half years, residents of Delhi are currently being forced to drive 20 kilometres to the nearest issuing office.
