Cattlemen underwhelmed by BSE funding announcement

Toronto – Haldimand-Norfolk-Brant MPP Toby Barrett echoed reported comments from the head of the Ontario Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) expressing disappointment with the Premier’s Mad Cow funding announcement.

Barrett spoke with a number of farmers at the Ontario Cattlemen’s Association Annual Meeting in Toronto last night, following Premier McGuinty’s announcement of farm funding - $10 million to support a new cull-animal strategy, and $7 million for beef farmers to ease the transition to a new generation of farm safety nets.

“While this is a small step in the right direction, I agree with those farmers who are concerned that this is not enough,” said Barrett. “Each additional day that the border remains closed, the cost of this crisis goes up.”

OCA President Ron Woodisse reportedly indicated disappointment in the announcement, stating, “this isn't the answer we were looking for”

The industry in Ontario alone has lost $131 million since the crisis erupted last May.

Ontario is Canada’s second largest beef producer – normally generating annual sales of $1 billion.

“Following last night’s meeting it’s clear that farmers have a high level of expectation for further government support,” said Barrett. “I urge both levels of government to move quickly on funding and border issues, and get our beef market heading back in the right direction.”
