government refuses to extend Edwards Landfill consultation
Queen’s Park –
“The Ministry believes there has been adequate public consultation
on the proposal, and that opening another 30-day consultation period is
unnecessary.” – that was how Minister of Environment Leona
Dombrowsky responded to Haldimand-Norfolk-Brant MPP Toby Barrett’s
letter requesting an extended consultation on the Certificate of Approval
amendment application for Edwards Landfill near Cayuga.
Barrett requested a new 30-day
consultation period after the original Environmental Bill of Rights (EBR)
posting on the application to expand the fill-rate into Edwards received
no submissions from the public.
“To suggest that an EBR
posting that receives absolutely zero in the way of response submissions
as ‘adequate public consultation’ is ludicrous,” Barrett
said. “Despite the Minister’s wish to turn a blind eye on
our County of Haldimand, I will continue to call n this government to
do the right thing and hold real public consultation on this controversial
project before it’s too late – stay tuned.”
The Ministry is currently reviewing
the request which would increase allowable tonnage into the Site to go
from the current 10 tonnes to 500 tonnes per day.
