MPPs celebrate anniversary of Polish Constitution
Queen's Park - This
is a week of special celebration for those who are of
Polish descent.
Yesterday, Ontario
PC MPP John Yakabuski rose in the Ontario Legislature on the occasion
of the annual commemoration of Poland's May 3, 1791,
constitution, which was the first in Europe and the second in the world.
"To the Poles
and their descendants, May 3rd is a national holiday, for it
bestows upon them a priceless heritage of humanitarianism, tolerance and
freedom conceived at a time when most of Europe lived under the existence
of unconditional power and tyranny," Yakabuski told members.
MPP Toby Barrett said
that he is very proud of the large Polish community in our area.
"I attended Heritage
Day in Delhi on Sunday and the Polish community was
represented well with displays and of course my favourite, a tasting of
perogies," Barrett said. "The Polish Hall in Delhi has been
around almost 60
years. I'm proud of the fact that my grandfather, T.B. Barrett, was present
at the official dedication of the Polish Hall on April 20, 1947."
Barrett went on to
say that the Polish Kashub culture has made a tremendous impact on individual
communities, as well as across Ontario and Canada.
