Barrett demands leadership in Caledonia land dispute
Queen’s Park—MPP Toby Barrett asked the Premier to start showing leadership in solving the ongoing land dispute in Caledonia, today in the Legislature.
“Premier, as you know, since February 28, a group of people have been occupying a subdivision under development, south of Caledonia and East of Six Nations,” Barrett told the Premier. “I have walked into the site many times, and I can assure you, all concerned wish for a peaceful resolution.”
“This is a standoff running well over 6 weeks,” Barrett said. “Premier, where is your leadership on this?”
Since the standoff began, Barrett has visited the site many times. He has communicated with the federal Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, the provincial Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, the Premier, the Governor General, and many concerned citizens of Caledonia.
“If you like, I can walk you- or your Minister- into the site,” Barrett told the Premier and a rowdy Liberal caucus. “I ask for some respect for the people down there.”
