Keep
Homolka away from general public: Barrett
Queens Park –
Haldimand-Norfolk-Brant MPP Toby Barrett has joined with MPP Bob Runciman
and other caucus colleagues in calling for action not words on the issue
of Karla Homolka’s imminent release.
Barrett today spoke in support
of Runciman’s private member’s bill calling for residency
restriction, police reporting and electronic monitoring in order to best
assure the protection of the people of Ontario and Canada from this convicted
and dangerous killer.
Barrett says the ‘deal
with the devil’ that will see the convicted sex offender, killer
and partner of Paul Bernardo released from prison July 5th, “a unique
situation, deserving of unique treatment, and we have to find a unique
solution.
It was only 2001 that the National
Parole Board indicated their unease at Homolka’s early release,
determining that she was “likely to commit an offence causing the
death of or serious harm to another person.”
Barrett pointed out in the
legislature that Homolka’s reputation may also put her in a dangerous
situation when she is released.
The Haldimand-Norfolk-Brant
MPP concluded with a call for action.
“Attorney General Michael
Bryant is telling us, ‘No matter where she goes, no matter what
she does ... we will be one step ahead of her.’ - well, I say, good
luck.” Barrett intoned. “Can you ensure that we’ll be
one step ahead of a sniper, for example, a hired hit man? Because that
could be the reality of what awaits notorious deviants like Homolka once
they begin rubbing shoulders with those that abhor their actions.”
“I ask the Attorney General:
Find a way. Keep Homolka away from the general public—if anything,
for her own safety. Do it!”
