FASday Bell Concordance rings out in Haldimand-Norfolk-Brant
Caledonia –MPP Toby Barrett thanked all those who once again participated in this year’s Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Bell Concordance following a bell ringing ceremony at the Caledonia Presbyterian Church.

Barrett Constituency Assistant Jen Beekman joined Reverend Thomas Vais in ringing church bells at 9:09 this morning, as others across Haldimand-Norfolk-Brant - and throughout the world - chimed-in for a united international reminder of the dangers of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
Since 1999, churches, fire departments, town halls, parents and other supporters have joined together at 9:09am on the 9th day of the 9th month (September) as part of the FAS Bell Concordance – an initiative of FASworld.
“Thanks to all who joined in this important initiative which serves as a vital reminder of the dangers of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome,” said Barrett. “Awareness is crucial in beating this disease, and curbing the debilitating effects of FAS.”
FAS refers to a broad range of disorders caused by a woman’s use of alcohol during pregnancy. It is the leading known cause of mental retardation and birth defects in the United States and Canada. When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, so does her baby. The more she drinks, the more her baby is at risk for:
- Brain damage
- Learning disabilities
- Heart and limb defects
- Abnormal facial features
- Slower growth, before and after birth
- Delayed development
