Barrett votes for hands-free cell phone use when driving

Queen’s Park—MPP Toby Barrett spoke, and voted, in favour of a Private Members’ Bill restricting cell phone use while driving, today in the Legislature.

“From what I can see, documented need for this legislation and support certainly appears to be widespread,” Barrett informed MPPs in the House.  “I see it as yet another opportunity to make highways safer for all of us.”

“Obviously handheld cell phones and driving are not a very good mix,” Barrett said.  “Documentation on the dangers of distraction—it’s widespread.”

If passed, the Highway Traffic Amendment Act will limit hand-held cell phone use while driving to experienced emergency personnel.  However, hands-free devices would be permitted.

“I hope that this Legislation will serve as a wakeup call for motorists who allow themselves to be distracted while driving,” Barrett said after his speech.  “Education is the key, but we can’t forget about enforcement.”
