Another tobacco tax hike adds insult to injury: Barrett

Sarnia – A day after revelations that McGuinty’s anti-tobacco strategy could cost the gaming industry – and the charities they support – a half billion dollars, the government is hammering another nail in the coffin.

“The tobacco board is already waving the white flag, charity bingos are closing their doors and today this government chooses to add another $1.25 per carton of cigarettes,” Barrett exclaimed. “People are losing their jobs, charities will see their gaming revenue reduced and the Ontario government is reaping the rewards of a clear money grab that only adds insult to an already injurious situation.”

The tax hike is the latest salvo in the McGuinty Liberal war on tobacco.

“Coupled with the move two months ago by Imperial to pull up stakes for a friendlier business environment in Mexico, this latest moves kicks sand in the face of farmers who have been brought to their knees,” concluded Barrett. “Clearly this government is addicted to tobacco taxes and doesn’t know when to quit!”
