High taxes force Imperial to send jobs south
Simcoe – The Ontario government ‘war on tobacco’ has forced the elimination of 635 jobs at Imperial Tobacco’s Guelph and Aylmer plants according to Opposition Agriculture Critic Toby Barrett.
Barrett commented following Imperial’s announcement to close the doors on 80 jobs at the threshing plant in Aylmer and 555 positions in Guelph. The company says it will continue to process Ontario tobacco at a manufacturing facility in Monterrey, Mexico. [Read more]

Queens Park — Agriculture week came and went at the Ontario Legislature with little more than a whisper from the provincial government according to PC Agriculture Critic Toby Barrett.
The week previous to Thanksgiving was designated through a 1998 Private Members Bill introduced by former PC MPP Bert Johnson (Perth) to “provide special recognition for the contribution of Ontario’s farmers to our society by proclaiming the week commencing on the Monday immediately before Thanksgiving Day in each year as Ontario Agriculture Week.” [Read more]

Simcoe – An Energy Probe report ranking North American coal-fired generating stations adds fuel to arguments against closing down Ontario’s fossil fuel producers in the face of high natural gas prices and escalating demand.
The report by the well-known energy and environmental watchdog ranks 403 coal-fired generating stations by the pollution they produce per unit of power. Two of the Lambton units rank in the top ten clean facilities. None of the Lambton units nor three other remaining coal-fired stations in the province -- Thunder Bay, Atikokan, and our Nanticoke facility -- are low in the rankings of coal polluters. [Read more]
